LANCOM / R&S · Fortinet
Networks, Wi-Fi & security for education.
From classroom access points to connections between sites, we plan, install and maintain networks for schools and education providers. Wired networks, Wi-Fi, access rules and central management are considered together.
Networks in education
Start with the setting. Then choose the equipment.
LANCOM/R&S and Fortinet offer solutions for networking and security. The starting point is how your organisation uses its network.
Components by role
Vendor examples show alternatives, not a required product combination.
Model, firmware, licences and existing systems determine the available functions. We agree equipment and administration before installation; firewall rules and VPN are explained on the security page.
Start with the buildings and their users
How many devices are used at the same time? Where are the classrooms, administrative offices and servers? Which cables and connections are already available? These questions shape network design more than the choice of an individual device.
We assess the infrastructure and establish bandwidth, device density and application needs. Building layout and wireless surveys inform Wi-Fi planning. Effective wireless provision needs sufficient capacity for actual use as well as coverage.
Build LAN and Wi-Fi around your requirements
Switches, routers and access points connect rooms, endpoints and sites. We plan and configure the necessary components, account for uplinks and Power over Ethernet, and check the intended connections during commissioning.
Extensions need to fit the existing infrastructure. An additional access point, for example, may require changes to cabling, switch ports and power provision. As device numbers grow, we therefore assess the full connection path.
Separate traffic and control access
Teaching, administration and guests need different access arrangements. VLANs and network rules help separate these areas and allow the connections that are required. We also establish which services need to be reachable from each network.
Firewalls and VPN connections from LANCOM/R&S or Fortinet can complement this architecture. The configuration depends on your sites, remote access needs and existing security arrangements. Our security page explains firewall, VPN and rule maintenance in more detail.
Choose LANCOM/R&S or Fortinet to suit the environment
LANCOM/R&S and Fortinet are our networking and security partners. Both offer components for LAN, Wi-Fi and firewalls. Suitable equipment follows from the installed estate, required connections and agreed support. Using both vendors together is not a prerequisite.
For LANCOM/R&S, the LANCOM Management Cloud can manage compatible network devices centrally. For Fortinet, suitable FortiSwitch and FortiAP components can be managed through FortiGate. We check supported combinations, firmware, licences and the intended administration approach in each case.
From commissioning to ongoing operations
Before a changeover, we agree the sequence of work and discuss possible interruptions. After installation, we check the intended connections and record configurations and relevant changes. Existing sign-in arrangements, platforms and device management are taken into account.
We support administration, monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting within the agreed scope. When connections fail or additional rooms need access, we investigate wireless coverage, network components and the affected services together.
Questions about network planning
Can existing components be reused?
We check their condition, support status, capacity and required functions. This establishes which devices can remain in use and where expansion or replacement would be appropriate.
Should a Wi-Fi extension include a wireless survey?
Buildings, device density and existing wireless coverage affect the design. We establish which assessment and measurements your project needs.
Do you provide support after installation?
Yes. Administration, monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting are agreed around your environment and the people responsible.
